“I am setting out on the road because I never knew what Moomat Ahiko meant until I thought to ask. I am starting this journey because I am yet another girl trying to make sense of her dead, crazy mother. I want to understand the land that made her, to see if it made me, too. Because somewhere my mother stops and I begin, just like how somewhere in the McClure tunnel the 1 stops and the 10 begins. Something magic happens in that tunnel. Something I think that is wholly American. I am going into that tunnel. I am heading east, and I don’t know who I’ll be on the other side.
